Clos du Gravillas
Nicole grew up in Narbonne in the South of France whereas John came to France from somewhere much farther west; Kentucky, America. In 1996 they started Clos du Gravillas in St Jean de Minervois planting Syrah, Cabernet and Mourvedre. In 1999, the first year they started to make wine they came across 2.5ha of Carignan planted between 1911 and 1970 and a small parcel of old Grenache Gris vines. Nowadays their 8ha of vineyards at 270 metres altitude benefits from ample sunny days in summer, letting the grapes develop the necessary alcohol levels, creating structural depth and maximum grape ripeness, and a cooling breeze blowing down from the Montagne Noire at night allowing the grapes to retain their acidity creating the perfect growing conditions to make excellent wine.
