MOTHER ROCK, JOHAN MEYER, Swartland – Organic

Johan Meyer likes to keep himself busy. He makes two ranges of wines: Mother Rock, a collaboration with Indigo Wine founder Ben Henshaw showcasing the best and purest expression of the Swartland’s diverse terroir; and his personal project JH Meyer wines, inspired by his experience working in California. Johan, a rising star of the new South African wine scene, has developed strong relationships with some of the best grape growers across the Cape, and has gained access to some of the region’s best fruit. Noticing a gap in the UK market for artisanal, well-made Chenin at an accessible price, they decided to use this fruit to create the first Force Majeure. The success of this wine has given way to several new additions to the Force Majeure line including a Sémillon, a Cinsault Rosé and a red blend, all produced with the same principles as the original. They’ve also started working on new wines under the Mother Rock label, focusing on discovering exceptional parcels of well-farmed vines grown on a variety of soil types and vinified as simply as possible.  Johan himself says it best: “I believe the word terroir should be used in honest terms. Letting the area and grape speak for itself in the bottle is our goal – naturally fermented grape juice, that’s all!”.
