Cascina Zerbetta is a small estate located in Monferrato, Piemonte. It is a one-man operation run single-handedly by Paolo Malfatti since 2013. The farm is a total of seven hectares, four of which are vines, and the rest organic hazelnuts, which are sold locally. Farming has been organic since vines were first planted in 1997, and wine production – focused on Barbera planted on Terra Rossa soils – has always shared the same values: hands-off, minimal intervention, the use of only natural yeasts, no fining or filtration, and little to no sulphite additions. Alongside Paolo’s unique and expressive Barbera, his naturally sparkling ‘Shan Pan’ made from Sauvignon Blanc has gained a loyal following.
